Navigating your NDIS plan can be confusing. Here is a clear breakdown of the key components, support budgets, and how to use them effectively.
Understanding Your NDIS Plan: A Beginner's Guide
Navigating your National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan can sometimes feel overwhelming. You receive a document full of tables, numbers, and jargon. However, understanding these key components is crucial to making the most of your funding and achieving your goals.
Key Parts of Your Plan
1. Your Goals
Your plan is built around your personal goals. These are the things you told the planner you wanted to achieve.
Short-term goals: Things you want to achieve in less than 12 months (e.g., "Find a new localized support worker").
Medium/Long-term goals: Bigger life ambitions (e.g., "Move out of home" or "Find a job").
Tip: All supports you claim must relate back to these goals.*
2. Funded Supports
This section outlines the budget allocated to you. It is usually divided into three main buckets:
Core Supports
This is the most flexible budget. It helps with everyday activities.
Assistance with Daily Life: Support workers to help with cooking, cleaning, or personal care.
Consumables: Low-cost items like continence products.
Assistance with Social & Community Participation: Taking you to activities.
Transport: Funding to help you get around.
Flexibility: You can generally move money between these categories (except Transport).*
Capacity Building Supports
This funding is for building your independence and skills. It is less flexible—you must use the funds for the specific category named.
Increased Social and Community Participation: Mentoring or classes.
Finding and Keeping a Job: Employment support.
Support Coordination: Help to manage your plan.
Capital Supports
This is for high-cost pieces of equipment or modifications.
Assistive Technology: Wheelchairs, communication devices.
Home Modifications: Ramps, bathroom rails.
Note: These funds are strictly ring-fenced and cannot be used for anything else.*
Management Settings
Pay attention to how your plan is managed:
NDIA Managed: You can only use NDIS registered providers.
Plan Managed: You can use any provider (registered or not). The Plan Manager pays the bills.
Self Managed: You pay the bills and claim it back. You can use any provider.
